Here is a link to one of many sites that tells how to do this:

I hope you turn off your system each day because if so Win98 creates a backup once a day on first restart and you can go back to an earlier set of files easily. The ONLY fix that I found to work is to restore the registry using the scanreg /restore command at an MSDOS prompt. In addition to file-new being missing, context commands for my Icon Saver program are wiped out and God knows what else. Something here lately in Windows or from Nvidia incorrectly overwrites several registry keys whenever the Nvidia drivers are installed. It is caused by updating video card drivers for Nvidia cards. This has now happened to me three times in the last month and it has nothing to do with IE. To fix that I had to do a format and reinstall, and that's something I'd rather avoid this time.

I had a previous installation of Win 98SE that got corrupted in an unusual way - I had multiple copies of various folders in Windows/System, with the same names! I had two "Fonts" and two "System" folders, among others. Things went rather strange with my machine once before. The most annoying thing is, after all this trouble, the game didn't speed up at all! I need an upgrade fairly soon.Ĥ0Gb Maxtor HDD (3 partitions - C: is 2GB Windows boot, D: is 1GB for CD-R mastering and E: is 37GB for software/games installation).

I don't see why my drivers (OR File menu) should have been corrupted - surely all Windows defrag is supposed to do is REARRANGE data, not corrupt it! It was later that I realised that the "NEW" option on both the right-click and FILE menus had gone AWOL, so now I can't create new folders or files. When I reinstalled them, things started working properly again. I eventually tracked the problem down to my video card drivers. I decided to clean up my registry and then defrag my C: (boot) and E: (software installation) partitions to try to speed things up a bit.Īfterwards, I found that I couldn't watch DVDs with WinDVD, or play Thief. Does anyone know how I can get things back to the way they're supposed to be?Ī few months ago, I was playing Star Trek: Armada II, and with bigger maps, the game seemed rather slow, with lots of HDD accessing. I've since looked through the registry, and all the "ShellNew" entries seem to be intact, as is my ShellNew folder in Windows/System. After a recent registry cleaning session and defrag of my HDD, the "NEW" option under Windows' File menus seems to have vanished.
